How to Navigate the Medical Chart/Record in Helix?

This article explains how doctors can open and navigate the Medical Chart in Helix, understand its layout, and view patient context during a visit.

▶️ How to Open the Medical Chart

  1. Go to Home → Today’s Admissions.

  2. Locate the patient in the Services panel.

  3. Click the blue button to Open Medical Chart.

🖥️ Chart display behavior

  • The Medical Chart opens over the Home screen.

  • Click the blue button (top-right) to open the chart in a new tab.

  • Click the red X (top-right) to close the chart and return to Home.


🧩 Medical Chart Layout

The Medical Chart supports 32 specialties.
Each specialty chart is tailored to its department, but the layout remains the same every time.

The chart is divided into four sections:

👤 1. Top Section — Patient Demographics & General Medical History

This section displays a read-only snapshot of key patient information.

📌 Information shown

  • Identity: Patient name, photo (if Emirates ID scanned), File/MRN

  • Basic details: Age, gender, date of birth, nationality, national ID

  • Contact details: Mobile number and email (may be hidden)

  • Status tags: Colored labels added for quick identification

🔒 Role-based privacy

  • Admin users can mask sensitive fields such as mobile number or email

  • Masked values appear as ****

✏️ What clinicians can update

  1. Blood Group (ABO/Rh)

    • Click ABO → select Blood Group and Rh → Submit

  2. Tags

    • Click Tag + → enter label → Submit

    • Tags appear highlighted (red) to nurses, doctors, and reception

    • To delete a tag, click the tag and confirm

  3. General Medical History

    • Entered during Screening by nurses

    • Editable by doctors

🩺 2. Middle Section — Specialty Chart

This is the clinical documentation area of the Medical Chart.

📝 Features

  • Structured fields using dropdowns or free text

  • Upload images (before/after)

  • Draw on existing sketches

  • Enter diagnoses at the bottom using ICD-10 codes

    • Multiple codes supported

  • 🎙️ Speech recognition (Verto) for dictation

ℹ️ Notes

  • Each specialty chart is documented separately in Helix Default Charts KB

  • Dental charts require specific setup

  • Custom charts can be built (referenced in Medical Templates KBs)


🕒 3. Right Section — Timeline & Services

This panel shows a chronological summary of previous visits.

🔍 Default behavior

  • Displays visits only from the same department as the opened service

    • Example:

      • Ophthalmology service → Ophthalmology visits only

      • Physiotherapy service → Physiotherapy visits only

🗂️ Available options

  • Filter visits by:

    • Date

    • Doctor’s name

  • Access:

    • Full medical history (per department)

    • Insurance claim forms

    • Medical reports

    • Discharge summary reports

    • Follow-up notes

🌐 Viewing full patient history

  • Go to Patient File → Medical History

  • This view shows visits across all departments


🧰 4. Left Section — Patient Management Panel

The Patient Management panel appears in:

  • Screening page

  • Medical Chart

🧾 Core options available across all specialties

  • Prescription

  • Custom Prescription

  • Investigations & Labs

  • Referrals

  • Documents / Uploads

  • Consents

  • Add Service / Add Package

  • Consumables / Stock Issue

  • Open Patient Profile

🧩 Specialty-specific options

  • Additional options appear based on department

  • Some specialties (e.g., Ophthalmology) display up to 12 options

🔐 Access control

  • Visibility and access are role-based


👁️ Medical History Panel(Available in the Patient File) — How to expand/collapse?

  • Use the Hide / Show button to collapse or expand medical notes

  • Button label reflects the next action:

    • Hide → collapses notes

    • Show → expands notes

⚙️ Default behavior (admin setting)

  • Go to Control Panel → System Settings → Account Settings

  • Toggle Auto-expand Medical History

    • ON: Expanded by default

    • OFF: Collapsed by default

Users can manually override the view at any time.


📝 Notes

  • Most demographic information is entered by Reception during registration

  • Screening information is entered by nurses

  • What clinicians can view or edit depends on role permissions
