How to Order Investigations, Labs, and Referrals in Helix

This article explains how doctors can order internal investigations and labs, request external investigations, and create internal or external referrals in Helix. All orders and referrals created are stored within the patient’s Medical Chart and Medical History.

All actions described in this article are accessed from:

  • Medical Chart → Patient Management


🧪 Ordering Investigations & Labs (Internal)

▶️ Add an investigation

  1. Open the patient’s Medical Chart

  2. Go to Patient Management → Investigations & Labs

  3. Select the required Investigation/Lab service from the drop-down

  4. (Optional) Set a Date

  5. (Optional) Add a Note

  6. Click Submit

➕ Add more investigations

  • Repeat the same steps to order additional investigations

🗂️ Where it is saved

  • All ordered investigations are saved automatically in the Medical Chart

🖨️ Printing investigations

  • Print immediately after submitting, or

  • Open the Medical History panel (right side), locate the investigation, and click Print


🌍 External Investigations (Send-Out Orders)

ℹ️ What this is

External Investigations are used when a patient is sent to perform tests outside the clinic.
The system includes a pre-defined list of investigations, and new ones can be added during ordering.

▶️ Order an external investigation

  1. Open Medical Chart → Patient Management → External Investigation

  2. In the Investigation field, start typing to search

    • If the investigation does not exist, click Add item

  3. (Optional) Set a Date

  4. (Optional) Add a Note

  5. (Optional) Select a Location (external facility)

  6. Click Submit

  7. Repeat the steps to add more investigations


🧹 Manage the current list (before printing)

  • Remove a single investigation using the red “–” (Delete) button

  • Remove all investigations using Delete All


⭐ Save and reuse investigations as a preset

  1. After creating the list, click Save as Preset

  2. Enter a Preset Name and confirm

  3. Next time, use Select Preset to auto-populate the list


🖨️ Print & storage

  • Print immediately after submitting, or

  • Open the Medical History panel, locate Investigations, and click Print


🏥 External Referral Locations (Setup Reference)

📌 Purpose

Locations added here appear wherever external referrals or external investigations are created.

➕ Add a referral location

  1. Go to Control Panel → EMR Settings → Referral Locations

  2. Click + Add

  3. Enter:

    • Name

    • Phone

    • Email

    • Address

  4. Click Submit


🔍 Manage referral locations

  • Search-as-you-type (top right)

  • Export/print controls (top left)

  • Pagination (bottom right)

  • Select a location to Edit or Delete


🔁 Referrals in Helix

Helix supports both Internal and External referrals.


🏥 Internal Referral

▶️ Create an internal referral

  1. Open Medical Chart → Patient Management → Referrals

  2. Set Type = Internal

  3. Select the Doctor from the drop-down

  4. Enter the Referral Text

  5. Click Save

  6. Click Print if required

🗂️ Storage

  • Saved in Medical History

  • Can be reprinted later


🌐 External Referral

▶️ Create an external referral

  1. Open Referrals

  2. Set Referral Type = External

  3. Enter the Medical Provider name (free text)

  4. (Optional) Select a Preset Location

  5. Enter the Referral Text

  6. Click Save

  7. Click Print

🗂️ Storage

  • Saved in Medical History

  • Can be reprinted later


📝 Notes

  • Internal and external referrals follow different selection methods

  • Preset locations appear across external investigations and referrals

  • All investigations and referrals are accessible from the Medical History panel
