How to Create and Manage Prescriptions in Helix (Including eRx)
This article explains how doctors can create, manage, print, and reuse prescriptions in Helix, including the use of prescription presets, safety checks, and electronic prescriptions (eRx) from the Medical Chart.
🧭 Where to Access Prescriptions

Open the patient’s Medical Chart

Go to Patient Management → Prescription
📝 Creating a Prescription
1️⃣ Select a medication

Click the Medication name field
-
Search by brand name or generic name
-
If the medication is not found:
-
Start typing
-
Click Add item to add it on the fly
-
(Medications can also be added to the master list from the Control Panel.)
2️⃣ (Optional) Add an alternative medication
-
Use the Alternative medication field if you want to suggest a substitute
3️⃣ Review auto-populated drug information
Once selected, the system displays:

Scientific name
-
Brand name
-
Ingredients
-
Dosage form
-
Pack
-
Route
-
Unit price
4️⃣ Enter dosage and schedule

Dosage (e.g., 2)
-
Unit (e.g., tablets)
-
Frequency (e.g., once daily, every 6 hours)

Duration
-
Enter a number
-
Select unit: day / week / month / year

🔁 Tapered dosage

Click + to add additional dosage lines
-
Up to 5 steps are supported
5️⃣ Add notes (optional)

Enter patient instructions if required
6️⃣ Add medication to the prescription

Click Add to prescription
-
Repeat the same steps to add more medications
The prescription is auto-saved and can be printed at any time.
⭐ Using Prescription Presets (Personal Favorites)
➕ Create a preset

After adding medications, click Add as preset
-
Enter a preset name
-
Click Add preset
Presets are user-specific.

Click Select preset

The medications are auto-added to the prescription
✏️ While using a preset

Red “–” icon: removes a drug from the current prescription only

Edit: modify dosage/frequency/duration for the current prescription only
🗑️ Delete a preset

Use the trash icon in the preset list
⚠️ Prescription Safety Checks
Helix automatically displays warnings for:

Drug–drug interactions
-
Allergy conflicts
(Example: patient allergic to penicillin)
🖥️ Submitting an Electronic Prescription (eRx)
📌 When eRx is available

Required setup must be completed
-
Patient insurance details must be updated
When enabled, the Submit eRx button appears.

Click Submit eRx
-
Wait for the eRx reference number
-
Click Print
🧾 Printed eRx may include

Diagnosis codes (if entered)
-
Recorded allergies
-
Insurance details
-
Provider name, signature, and stamp
(if configured in provider profile)
🛠️ eRx Troubleshooting
❗Issue: Reference number does not appear
What to do:

Read the error message shown on screen
-
Fix the issue based on the displayed reason

Resubmit the e-prescription
Most eRx failures are due to setup or configuration issues.

Go to Reports → DHPO Reports → e-Rx Submission
This report provides additional details for troubleshooting and audits.
🔄 Refill or Renew a Prescription from History
📍 From the Medical Chart

In the right panel (History), locate the previous prescription

Click Print
-
Optionally edit
-
Print
A new prescription is created with today’s date.

Option A — From the Medical Chart

Open the patient’s visit

In the right panel, locate the visit
-
Click Print next to Prescription
Option B — From the Patient File

Open the patient file
-
Go to Medical History
-
Locate the visit
-
Click Print next to Prescription
⚙️ Adding Medications to the Prescription Master List
📍 Access the setup

Go to Control Panel → MR Settings → Prescriptions

Select a medication to Edit or Delete
🔄 Refresh requirement

Log out and log back in
